CALL OUT:  Share your surplus Mooncakes and deliver festive spirit this mid-autumn festival

Each year in Hong Kong, it is estimated that over 3.2 million pieces of mooncake are wasted . Registered foodbank, Feeding Hong Kong, has a solution that will save all good mooncakes from going to waste, and will redistribute these to vulnerable communities across Hong Kong who enjoy a tasty treat and a chance to celebrate over food for the Mid-Autumn Festival.  Donate surplus Mooncakes NOW to Feeding Hong Kong Community Drop Off points, or create a Collection Corner at your organisation.

One of the most popular festive traditions in the Chinese culture, mooncakes represent the full moon and its associated legends, including symbolizing completeness and reunion. However, so popular are these sweet nuggets of pastry, salted egg and an abundance of other sweet and savoury fillings, that each year, it is virtually impossible to eat the sheer quantity of Mooncakes that are gifted over the season.

FHK staff with Mooncakes

Feeding Hong Kong is a Hong Kong registered charity established in 2011 with a mission to save quality surplus food from going to landfills while delivering food security in Hong Kong. The only foodbank in Hong Kong accredited by the Global Food Banking Network, the organisation has been hosting a Mooncake Madness food drive since 2018, and in that time has redistributed over 150,000 mooncakes to senior centres, after-school clubs, charity kitchens and other non-profit programmes.

Gabrielle Kirstein, CEO and Founder of Feeding Hong Kong explains, “The Mid-Autumn Festival is a time for celebration, but also a time to reflect on the issue of food waste in our community. By repurposing these festive treats, we not only reduce waste, but also bring the spirit of the season to those in need – It’s a practical, and very tasty solution. This campaign is a chance for everyone to get involved and make a real difference, while learning about the importance of food sustainability. Together, we can ensure that no mooncake goes to waste and that no person in Hong Kong goes without it.”

Mooncake Madness 2024 Exhibition - Landmark East

Landmark East & DHL enter into the spirit of Mooncake Madness

For those working or living in the Kwun Tong area, Landmark East is hosting its inaugural exhibition to raise awareness about food waste and food security, from Monday 26 August to Friday 20 September 2024, together with an opportunity to drop off surplus mooncakes in the main lobby of AIA Kowloon Tower, alongside 16 other drop off points across Hong Kong.  DHL Express Hong Kong will also be contributing their piece of Mooncake Madness by ensuring the safe delivery of all mooncake donations to the Feeding Hong Kong warehouse.

Feeding Hong Kong will welcome all Mooncake donations to be received by 13 September, allowing enough time to redistribute to its network of frontline charities so their beneficiaries get to experience these festive delights, along with Mid-Autumn Meal Parcels, packed with enough basic food items for 10 meals.
