We are still working Together for Tai Po
It has been almost one year since the tragic fire in Tai Po triggered a profound outpouring of compassion, solidarity, and financial aid from across the Hong Kong community.
Over the past 10+ months, Feeding Hong Kong has worked hand-in-hand with frontline charities on the ground, addressing the ongoing needs of impacted families as they navigate the challenge of relocating to transitional housing while waiting to settle into permanent homes.
Central to this effort has been the establishment of the ‘Together for Tai Po Foodbank’ – a dedicated, centralised facility serving as a hub for food storage, quality control and packing for the Tai Po community. Powered by generous donations, Feeding Hong Kong has provided sustained comprehensive assistance to charities operating on the ground, tailored to the residents’ evolving needs. This has included food and meal vouchers, Community Care food packs, personal care items and fresh food, as well as nutritious ingredients to share with community kitchens.
To date, Feeding Hong Kong has distributed over 90 tonnes of essential food items and personal care products to support local residents.
Listening and adapting: The frontline impact
The true success of this initiative lies in the strength of local charity partnerships. By listening closely to partners on the ground, support has been tailored to fit the practical realities of everyday life in transitional housing:
- Nutritious & fresh produce: “Residents are delighted with these healthy, nutritious options,” shared one partner charity. “They make a big difference, especially for elderly residents, children and expectant mothers.” Feeding Hong Kong has also leveraged local market proximity to secure daily donations of fresh fruit and vegetables.
- Convenient Care Packs: Limited cooking facilities in transitional units mean ready-to-eat and quick-prep items are essential. “The food packs – especially the soup packs – are very convenient and nourishing,” noted a partner organization. “With minimal kitchen facilities in transitional units, instant soup packs and noodles have been a practical lifeline.”
- Choice and financial relief: Supermarket and restaurant vouchers have offered families dignity and choice. The donations of food and vouchers also provide financial relief for charity partners. “This has really helped to alleviate economic pressure and allows us to reallocate our limited resources to support the residents in other crucial areas.”
- A touch of warmth: Voucher variety has also been tailored across generations. “Younger Tai Po residents love coupons for local favourites like Fairwood or Tong Kee Bao Dim,” a partner shared. “And the occasional surprise treats, like ice cream, have brought extra warmth and joy to the community during a difficult year.”
Looking ahead
As affected residents begin the transition into permanent public housing, Feeding Hong Kong remains committed to standing beside them. Together with local charity partners, the team will continue monitoring emerging needs to ensure no one is left behind.
Feeding Hong Kong extends its deepest gratitude to the charity workers and volunteers who work tirelessly every day to bring stability, care and hope back to the Tai Po community. Every act of kindness makes a difference – and together, we are helping families rebuild their lives.
