Driving away hunger

Since day one, one of our most popular volunteer roles has been Delivery Assistant. It is an activity that involves volunteers rolling up their sleeves and helping to load and unload food donations from our vans. It’s hard work but highly rewarding. As one volunteer remarked at the end of his first day: “Wherever and whoever we visit, we are greeted with a helping set of hands and also huge smiles”.

Our dedicated Delivery Assistants start the day by teaming up with Farley or Shing, our two top-notch drivers. Their first job is to work together to load the vans with food parcels that have been tailored to the charities’ needs. It’s then time to hit the road and follow the day’s route, planned carefully by our Operations team to maximize efficiency and reduce cost.

Thanks to Sino Group for the donation of this Feeding Hong Kong van.

Each day the route varies. Sometimes it takes our volunteers to areas of Hong Kong they’ve never before visited; on other occasions to districts they know well, but not the organisations working there supporting families in need with food. One of the best parts of the job is meeting the teams running these much-needed programmes and learning more about the inspiring job they do in our community.

Once deliveries are completed, it’s time to pick up the day’s donations and bring them back again to our Yau Tong warehouse. It may be several pallets of food from a distributor or a stack of cases from a supermarket – all quality food that would otherwise have ended up in landfill but instead will go to help someone in need. And there’s a lot of food to collect. Last month alone, we collected a record breaking 80 tonnes of surplus.

None of this would be possible without our amazing volunteers who support our team every step of the way and our fleet partners Goodman, Lee Hysan Foundation, Sino Group and Zung Fu. As the champions of our four vans, they have led the charge to drive away hunger in Hong Kong. Thank you!
