Warehouse spotlight

The FHK warehouse is quite simply where all the action takes place. Each week, over 10 tonnes of food rolls through the doors where it is received, sorted and logged by our hard working operations team. It never stays there for long though – each week we’re picking, packing and shipping food assignments to our charity partners. In this section, we’ll be introducing you to the people, partners and processes that make this possible.

This month, we would like to introduce you to one of our daily food donors – Wellcome.  Since 2012, Hong Kong’s largest supermarket chain have donated the equivalent of 140,000 meals through Feeding HK. From an initial partnership with 10 stores, we are now collecting from close to 100 supermarkets.

1. What is the ‘Wellcome food donation programme?

Wellcome donates food items that have imperfect packaging or are close to their expiry date to people in need through local food banks. We have been collaborating with Feeding Hong Kong as our primary partner since 2012.

2. Why is it important for Wellcome to support Feeding Hong Kong?

Wellcome supports Feeding Hong Kong because of its extensive charity network, established infrastructure and close collaboration with a number of charity partners in different districts. Their ability to source, collect and redistribute food items helps ensure that donated items reach target beneficiaries in an efficient way. We believe this is the most effective use of the efforts we put into our food donation programme.

3. How has the programme evolved since it started?

The programme has expanded from 10 participating stores in 2012 to nearly 100 stores in 2015. The total amount of food we have donated since the programme launched is equivalent to 140,000 meals.

4. What type of food items does Wellcome donate?

Wellcome donates an array of grocery items including canned foods, oil and condiments, rice, cereals and grains, noodles, pasta, baby food and beverages.

5. Volunteering is at the heart of this partnership. Why do your employees enjoy helping Feeding Hong Kong?

Our team enjoys working with Feeding Hong Kong because the volunteer activities connect with our daily operations. Participants get to conceptualise the end-to-end donation process through warehouse packing activities at Feeding HK. This is the middle step between our donated items and the beneficiaries. These activities provide Wellcome volunteers with a better understanding of our community endeavours and recognises their everyday effort in carrying out the initiative at store level.

6. What are your plans for the future with FHK?

Food donation is one of Wellcome’s key green and community initiatives. We look forward to strengthening our partnership with Feeding Hong Kong by expanding the programme with support from our logistics and operations teams. We also hope to contribute more to the community in which we operate by bringing in a wider variety of volunteer activities such as regular packing sessions and Feeding HK’s After School programme.
